Recently I heard my smoke alarm beeping, then a very loud pop (explosive sound). It continued for a few minutesoff and on. I was concerned that it might be a wiring problem - so I called the fire department to check it out. They informed me that my gas fireplace was probably making the loud sounds, but it seemed odd to me that it occured concurrently with the smoke alarm beeping (sign of low battery). I have had to change my high ceiling battery every two months or so which is annoying in a 15' ceiling. Even on a ladder -if you are not 6' or taller - it is difficult to reach from the top tier of the drop down area. But after the fire fighters left - my son checked it out and informed me that my battery had exploded! I googled for more information online and learned that it is NOT SAFE to use DURACELL batteries in the First Alert Smoke Alarms in my home. PLEASE CHECK out your model numbers- Certain First Alert Alarms manufacutured between 1999 and 2000+ are dangerous i!
f used with Duracell batteries. First alert and the Safety Comission is aware of this, but are NOT issuing a recall nor any public announcements, as the alarms do work with other style batteries. Pass this on to Homeowners Assn's and all in this area, please.
It is possible to be injured by an explosive battery!
